The Academe at 198’s Bay Area apartments are located in the heart of San Francisco and offer housing for employees from institutions across the Bay Area, graduate students, including law students, post-doctoral scholars, medical residents, and clinical fellows. Residents may select furnished apartments that range from efficiencies to two-bedroom units.

Who lives at the Academe 198?

Graduate students, trainees, and professionals from all higher education institutions are welcome to live at the Academe at 198. Residents enjoy an environment emphasizing interdisciplinary interaction, supporting the vision of increasing collaboration among scholars and professionals of various disciplines. This community presents a unique opportunity to cultivate a lifelong network of scholars, professionals, and friends.

What makes the Academe at 198 unique?

The building is purposefully designed for graduate and professional students and employees who wish to enjoy an environment where residents from different backgrounds and academic programs live, interact, work, learn, and build lasting relationships. Quality living standards, attractive amenities, and a great location offer opportunities for living and learning across disciplines, institutions, and professions.

Do students and professionals from any institution have priority placement?

Some institutions have already reserved apartments for their students and other affiliates; however, all eligible prospective residents may also rent directly from UC Law San Francisco. Residents from institutions that have reserved accommodations may receive priority placement.

What is included in the rent?

The apartments at the Academe at 198 are fully furnished and feature access to amenity spaces such as the seventh-floor lounge, fitness center, and dog run. High-speed institutional internet is provided. Additionally, utilities are included in the base rent.

What amenities does the building offer?

The building offers many accessible features and amenities to residents, including a fitness center, a central laundry room, incubator spaces such as meeting and study rooms with skyline views, communal kitchens, an outdoor courtyard, a bicycle storage space, and a dog run.

Constructed to the University’s high standards for safety and quality, the Academe at 198 is expected to receive LEED Silver certification by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Is there laundry on-site?

Yes, there is a large on-site laundry room with over 60 washers and dryers. It is open 24 hours a day, and the machines are provisioned with optional app tracking to notify you when your clothes are done. There are no individual washers and dryers in units.

Is there a mail and package room?

There is a mail room and a package room. Mail is dropped by the postal service and sorted into individual mailboxes daily. Packages are delivered to electronic package lockers, refrigerated if needed, with a system that sends text messages to alert you when you have received a package.

What is the pet policy?

Pets are permitted with an additional pet deposit and monthly pet rent. While cats and some dogs are allowed, please check with UC Law San Francisco Housing for details.

Is there security?

Yes, there is 24-hour on-site security. When entering the building, residents must swipe in at the main security desk on the first floor. The Academe at 198 participates in a safety ambassador program that covers the entire two blocks of the UC Law San Francisco campus from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. seven days a week.

Is there a fitness center?

There is a fitness center on the lower level of the Academe at 198 with cardio and weight equipment.

What is the Academe at 198 living environment?

The community provides a unique living experience for graduate and professional students and all eligible affiliates. Individuals interested in interdisciplinary, cross-disciplinary, and transdisciplinary study and research are encouraged to apply.

What is the guest policy?

As with a typical apartment, day visits and overnight guests are welcome, subject to building policies and guest guidelines agreed upon by apartment-mates (if applicable).

What are the transportation and parking options?

Monthly parking is available for residents at the 376 Larkin Garage. Please visit the Parking Garage website for information on parking rates and how to get monthly parking. Complimentary, secure inside bike parking is available. BART, MUNI, and the UCSF shuttle stops are convenient to the building for transportation to all campuses and popular city destinations. Vehicle parking passes are available at nearby municipal lots.

What is the contract length?

Contracts are generally an annual term, starting each August and ending in late July, regardless of the actual move-in date. Subject to advance notice requirements, limited academic flexibility options are available for qualifying residents to accommodate institutionally approved study abroad, externships, and graduation.

What is the process and application timeline?

Information regarding Fall 2024 application timeline will be available soon. Current students, new students who have accepted an offer of admission, and current or prospective employees may apply online at the UC Law San Francisco Housing website or the Academe at 198 website.

Who is managing Academe 198, and what staffing is on-site?

The Hastings Campus Housing Finance Authority, affiliated with UC Law San Francisco, owns and operates the building. On-site staff includes professional management and graduate student staff. Emergency maintenance is available 24/7.
